Mana rocks have come a long way since Alpha. And while most Commander players prefer 2-mana mana rocks (if they run any at all), Wizards continues to print more and more flexible 3-mana mana rocks. That is, 3-mana mana rocks that do far more than simply tap for a mana of a single color.
And many are budget friendly!
Rather Watch, than Read?
What Didn’t Make the Cut
Before I get into it, mana rocks like Dragon’s Hoard and Elementalist’s Palett, good in Dragon and Hydra tribal respectively, didn’t make the cut, even though they are super powerful in the right deck. I also left off Patchwork Banner as being too narrow to be played in any deck. Similarly, Glistening Sphere is a great option, but mostly for Infect decks. Of course, proliferate is a powerful mechanic for other decks, but since it’s a 1-time only effect, I went with another card that covers this.
These are the mana rocks that can slot into most decks.
10.

Chromatic Lantern – .44 cents
Even with all the budget-friendly dual lands, this old Commander staple is still the best at what it does for 4- and 5-color decks.
9.

Commander’s Sphere – .26 cents
How many times have you drawn a card off this artifact in desperation? Good early and late, this card has largely been supplanted by Arcane Signet.
8.

Murmuring Volume – .25 cents
If desperation drawing in the late game is good once, it’ll be good more than once, right? Let’s turn those dead cards into action with this mana rock!
7.

Decanter of Endless Water – $4.41
For one more mana, we get a Thought Vessel that can color fix for us. I’m pretty sure this common is so expensive because there is only a single printing in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate.

Progenitor’s Icon – .34 cents
Even in non-Tribal decks, this mana rock will let you cast your commander at instant speed.
5.

Patriar’s Seal – $4.96
Plays well with all those legendary creatures that tap to do something.
Like Decanter of Endless Water, this uncommon only has a single printing, which accounts for the price.
4.

Relic of Legends – $1.07
With the amount of legendary creatures in the game, this mana rock can easily make you 3 or more mana a turn.
3.

Aetheric Amplifier – .90 cents
Counters are everywhere in Magic at this point. For 4 mana, we get to double them up on a target permanent, like say, those Empower Jace tokens!
2.
The craft mana rocks: Sunbird Standard – .25 cents and Eye of Ojer Taq $1.48
I love that these mana rocks can turn into threats in the late-game with little effort beyond playing Magic.
1.
Laser Screwdriver/Sonic Screwdriver – $1.71/$3.04
It pains me to have a Dr. Who card in the number 1 slot, but the value these screwdrivers bring is simply too much to compete with.
What do you think? Have I forgotten any? What is your top 3-mana mana rock?
Thanks for reading and watching!
