The overload mechanic first appeared in Return to Ravnica in 2012 with 12 cards featuring it. Nearly 15 years later, we have a total of 27.

Do you know the top 3 most commonly played of the bunch?

Top 3 Most Played Overload Cards

3.

Damn – in 14.5% of decks according to edhrec.com.

Targeted removal that doubles as a sweeper is super good in Commander.

2.

Vandalblast – in 15% of decks

For just 5 mana, we get to destroy everyone’s artifacts but our own. A great way to make everyone else salty!

1.

I’m sure you knew it…Cyclonic Rift – in 20% of decks

Returning all your opponent’s permanents to their hand at instant speed is why this is a game changer.

The cheapest copy, despite multiple printings, will still set you back $31.

But there are budget-friendly overload cards that can do a good enough impression of these.

Top 5 Budget-Friendly Overload Cards for Commander

Looking for some budget friendly overload cards that can win games nearly as well as Cyclonic Rift?

Here are my top 5 underplayed budget overload cards and the decks they can go into.

5.

Electrickery – .30 cents, in less than 1% of decks.

I love this card in my Hawkeye, Young Avenger deck, but it really shines in any Red damage increasing deck.

Outside of those, it is quite good against token strategies, like Silverquill, the Disputant, Vraska, Soul of Stone, or Krenko Mob Boss.

4.

Mizzium Mortars – .62 cents, in 1.06% of decks

I love flexibility in Commander. A targeted removal spell early and a conditional boardwipe late. Great in the same decks as Electrickery and any R/X budget build, like my budget Bumi, Unleashed deck.

3.

Fangs of Kalonia – .34 cents, in 1.37% of decks

I love counter shenanigans and so does Wizards. With so many ways to increase counters on creatures, we should easily put 4 +1/+1 counters on our team before swinging in for lethal. It’s a great finisher for my budget lifegain deck with Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn.

Scale Up, in .44% of decks, is also budget friendly and powerful, but doesn’t synergize with counter shenanigans.

2.

Dragonshift – .30 cents, in .07% of decks

Ouch…

I love Dragons even more than counters shenanigans. This woefully underplayed card can turn any team of underachievers into evasive beaters. And at instant speed!

Great in any deck looking to make a bunch of token creatures, like my Narset, Enlightened Exile or Vraska, Soul of Stone decks.

1.

Blustersquall – .35 cents, in .44% of decks and Teleportal – .24 cents, in .27% of decks

I get why Cyclonic Rift is so good, but these two overload cards will be game over for less mana in the same spot Cyclonic Rift is.

Meanwhile, Blustersquall can save you from a lethal attack the same as Cyclonic Rift.

Budget U/X decks looking to win via combat should consider either or both of these cards as legit alternatives to the expensive game changer.
